01/16/2007: Greek Army Takes Delivery of New Apaches

(Balkanalysis.com Security & Intelligence Brief 18)  The Greek Army is now taking initial delivery of 12 new AH-64DHA Apache Longbow helicopters being produced by the Boeing Corporation at its Mesa, Arizona plant, according to a press release.

The Apaches come as part of a combined Foreign Military Sales agreement with the U.S. Army. All of the 12 next-generation Apaches are set to be produced and delivered during 2007.

The Greek Army has for the past decade been using the older AH-64A Apaches. The updated model boasts enhanced capabilities such as longer-range weapons accuracy, all-weather and night operations, integrated sensors, networking and digital communications for situational awareness, and real-time combat management, states Boeing.

The implementation of the planned acquisition comes a few months after the Greek Navy acquired 3 Roussen-class fast strike boats. Fast response air and sea craft are necessary for operations in a country largely comprised of sea, and strewn with islands and mountains.
