Valeria Giannotta

Valeria Giannotta is an Italian scholar specializing in Turkish politics and international relations. She is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Political Science in the International Relations Department of İstanbul Sabahattin Zaim University. She also engages in expert-level in strategic meetings and conferences on international Relations organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Valeria-GiannottaDr. Giannotta has been active in Turkey since March 2009 as a field researcher and lecturer. In addition to her current position, she has worked as a visiting researcher at the Department of International Relations of Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, and she has collaborated with the Centre of European Studies at Ankara University (ATAUM) and at the Center for European Studies Middle East Technical University (CES), also in Ankara. Dr. Giannotta has also served in this time as visiting scholar at Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara, chairing the course on Democratization Process in Muslim Countries, there and at Gazikent University in Gaziantep in 2011.

Her research interests include International Relations, the Turkish democratic transition within contemporary Turkish politics, Turkey-EU relations, Turkish foreign policy and the relationship between religion and politics. She has authored and presented several articles during national and international conferences on her area of expertise, and collaborated with several think-tanks.

In recent years, this has included research cooperation with the Aspen Institute Italy on Turkish foreign policy, and participation the Leading Scholars Program at the ASERI (Alta Scuola di Economia e Relazioni Internazionali/ Postgraduate School for Economy and International Relations) at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart) in Milan. Other similar activities include analytical reporting on Turkish politics and society for the CIPMO (Italian Center for Peace in Middle East). She also previously served as Junior Researcher at IRER (Istituto di Ricerca della Regione Lombardia/ Lombardy Region Research Institute) in Milan.

In addition to her contributions for, Dr. Giannotta writes for Aspenia Online and other Italian newspapers, Turkey’s Today’s Zaman. She has also contributed to several upcoming academic monographs on regional affairs and international relations.

Previously, Dr. Giannotta studied at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, where she received her PhD in Political Science and International Relations with a thesis on ‘The AKP (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) and its program on Conservative Democracy.’ From the same university, she also holds an MSc in International Relations and European Integration, and a BA in Political Sciences and International Relations, with theses concerning state-building in Post-Saddam Iraq and Italian left-wing anti-Americanism during the Iraq War.

In addition to her native Italian, Dr. Giannotta is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and has intermediate knowledge of Turkish.
