Mehmet Efe Biresselioglu

Mehmet Efe Biresselioglu is Balkanalysis.com country editor for Turkey. He has written for the website since 2007 on his country’s role in energy sector projects and policies in the Balkans, Mediterranean, Caspian and Trans-Caucasus regions, as well as articles on Turkish foreign policy vis-à-vis strategic developments in the Balkans, Iran, the Persian Gulf and Middle East.

Currently, Efe is based at the Izmir University of Economics in Turkey, where he holds the position of Vice Dean in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and also serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations. He is also a board member at the Turkish Energy and Climate Change Foundation (ENIVA).

In addition to his work for Balkanalysis.com, Efe has written a monograph, European Energy Security: Turkey’s Future Role and Impact(Palgrave Macmillan, 2011). He has also presented and published numerous seminar papers for relevant academic and governmental organizations since 2001, including IMT Lucca, the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, the European Society for Central Asian Studies and Ankara Chamber of Industry in Turkey. He has also contributed to the Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen.

Along with Turkish, Efe is fluent in English, and has advanced knowledge of Italian and Spanish, plus basic German and Finnish. His 2009 PhD and Doctor Europaeus from the IMT Lucca Institute for Advanced Studies in Italy focuses on Turkey’s role in EU energy security. He also holds an MA in European Studies from the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Turku in Finland (2005), Post-Graduate Diploma in International Protection of Human Rights from ABO Akademi in Finland (2005) and a BA in Political Science and Public Administration from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey (2003). Efe has also held visiting research fellowships at both the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and been a non-resident fellow at Finnish Business and Policy Forum.

Efe has also acted as the advisor for the President of the Ankara Chamber of Industry and involved in projects with Ankara Development Agency. In the private sector, he has also worked on energy market research at Deniz Investment and Securities in Istanbul. He also involved with consultancy work to private firms in Istanbul and Ankara.
