Ioannis Michaletos

Ioannis Michaletos is Balkanalysis.com Research Coordinator for Greece, and an independent analyst in Athens, covering issues ranging from political, security and energy-sector developments in the region to intelligence, counter-terrorism and organized crime.

Beyond Greece and the Balkans, Ioannis’ investigative remit includes events and trends in the trans-Mediterranean states of the Middle East and North Africa.

Ioannis’ specific areas of expertise include hydrocarbon investments and project implementation in the Balkans, and renewable energy projects in Greece; organized crime networks in the Balkans, and extremist groups, ranging from radical anarchist and right-wing entities to Islamist movements; regional defense sector procurement and the balance of military powers, as well as the Greek political scene.

Currently, Ioannis Michaletos is a security and energy affairs analyst at the Institute for Security and Defence Analysis in Athens. His findings are frequently cited by media there, and he participates in international events, including recently as a speaker for the NATO Defense School in Oberammergau, Germany. To coordinate Balkanalysis.com research in Greece and gather hard-to-find data, he meets often with diplomatic, business and security officials from a range of countries- indeed, Ioannis has the unusual honor of being our only correspondent to date who was mentioned in the Wikileaks cables.

Since 2005, Ioannis has developed an impressive body of work for Balkanalysis.com on many of the above issues. In addition, he has also written analytical reports and journalistic pieces for Jane’s Information Group, the European Energy Review, the European Oil and Gas Monitor, and the Hellenic Defense Review.

A native speaker of Greek, Ioannis has fluency in English, intermediate knowledge of French and basic Italian. Ioannis holds an Msc in human resources management from the University of Luton/Bedfordshire (2003), and a BA in political science from the University of Essex (2000).

Status: Ioannis Michaletos is currently available for speaking engagements and event participation.
