Gergana Yordanova

Dr. Gergana Yordanova, PhD is a Bulgarian researcher and banking expert who contributes articles and briefings for on economic and financial policy and security issues. She also conducts specialized research on the Hawala Remittance System within the context of the present migrant flows into Europe.

Gergana’s specific areas of interests and expertise include active sovereign debt management operations within the context of national economic and financial policy security; large-value payments and remittance systems as a money-laundering and terrorist financing criminal activities; public finance security.

Currently, Gergana is serving as an expert at the Bulgarian National Bank in Sofia, where she has been working at the Government and Government Guaranteed Debts Depository Directorate since 2007. In parallel with her duties and responsibilities as a bank officer, between 2007 and 2008 Dr. Yordanova was appointed as a representative of the Bulgarian National Bank in the Securities Working Group within the Payment and Securities Settlement Systems Committee of the European System of Central Banks at the European Central Bank.

In addition to her contribution for, Dr. Yordanova is acting as a visiting professor and a part-time lecturer on Sovereign Debt Management, Financial Security and Financial Intelligence. She is an author and a tutor of various tailor-made trainings and seminars in debt management and financial security.

A native speaker to Bulgarian, Gergana is also fluent in English and Spanish, with a very good command of German and Greek as well. Gergana holds several advanced degrees, most recently, earning a PhD in National Security and Defense from the National Defense College in Sofia, Bulgaria (2016) with a thesis on Sovereign Debt Management operations within the context of the National Security Policy.

Prior to that, she received her Master of Art degree in National Security and Defense from the National Defense Academy G. S. Rakovski in Sofia, Bulgaria (2011). She also earned a Master of Science in Public Finance in 2007 and a Bachelor of Science (2006) in Finance, both from the Tsenov Academy of Economics of Svishtov in Bulgaria. Her vocational education includes various professional training and seminars in payment and securities settlement systems (Bank for International Settlement, Switzerland and the National Bank of Turkey), payment systems oversight and regulations (the European Central Bank and the National Bank of Poland), and debt management (Finanzagentur, Deutsche Bundesbank).
