Apostolis Karabairis

Thessaloniki-based researcher Apostolis Karabairis contributes articles and briefings for on Bosnia & Herzegovina and Greece. His particular research interests include ethnic relations and political discourse in the Balkans, with specializations in Bosnia’s political system, elections and multi-cultural issues.

An honorary member of the Association of Election Officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Apostolis has also served as an OSCE/ODIHR elections observer in that country.

At present, Apostolis Karabairis is also a junior researcher for the Athens Working Group’s Transforming the Balkans project, at the Hellenic Center for European Studies (EKEM) in Athens. He previously served as a programme coordinator for the Kokkalis Foundation, and served during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games as a Russian language specialist.

In addition to writing for, Apostolis has also published articles in Transconflict and BalkanInsight, and has presented papers on Balkan issues at international conferences, including for the New England Political Science
at Northeastern University in Boston and Columbia University’s Association for the Study of Nationalities, as well as at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki. He has participated, further, at events sponsored by The Economist and the Greek government, NATO, and the University of Ioannina.

A native speaker of Greek, Apostolis also has knowledge of Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian (advanced), Russian (intermediate), Turkish (basic) and French (basic). Apostolis holds an MA in Southeastern European Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2009), and a BA in Political Science and Social Anthropology from the University of Macedonia’s Department of Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies (2006).
